Discover the Legacy and Innovation of Hope Technology on Monkamoo.com

Since its inception in 1989, Hope Technology has been synonymous with high-quality products and no-nonsense engineering. Co-owners Ian Weatherill and Simon Sharp have always believed in letting their products speak for themselves. For nearly 25 years, Hope Technology has been at the forefront of the cycling industry, designing, testing, and manufacturing virtually all products in-house at their factory in Barnoldswick, United Kingdom.

The Beginnings

In 1985, Ian Weatherill and Simon Sharp, former Rolls Royce Aerospace engineers and motorcycle trials enthusiasts, founded IPCO, a tool-making company. Unhappy with the performance of their cantilever brakes, they decided to create their own. In 1989, along with employee Owen Hardisty, they developed cable-operated calipers and started experimenting with disc brakes.

Evolution of Hope Technology

In 1991, Hope Technology was officially formed to market their innovative disc brakes and hubs. Their first product, a mechanical disc brake, quickly gained popularity. By 1992, Hope had gone global, showcasing their products at Interbike in Anaheim, USA, and establishing a strong presence in the UK and the US.

Milestones in Innovation

  • 1991: Introduced the first 6-bolt disc-specific hubs with sealed cartridge bearings.
  • 1994: Launched the first hydraulic brake, a powerful open system, at Eurobike.
  • 2000: Released the versatile Bulb hubs, tested by World Cup riders.
  • 2001: Introduced the legendary Mini brakes, revolutionizing XC racing.

Cutting-Edge Products

Hope Technology has continued to innovate, bringing motorcycle technology to the cycling world. The Mono6ti brake, introduced in 2003, was the first bicycle disc brake to feature titanium pistons in a 6-piston, one-piece caliper. Hope's product range expanded to include stems, lights, bottom brackets, and the iconic vented V2 brakes.

Commitment to Community

In 2011-12, Hope invested in local riders and the community by funding and building the "Hope Line" descent at Gisburn Forest. This project, developed with input from experienced enduro riders, features long drifting berms and flowy table tops.

Current Innovations

Today, Hope Technology continues to lead the industry from their state-of-the-art factory at Calf Hall Lane in Barnoldswick. They remain committed to producing high-quality, durable products that meet the demands of cyclists worldwide.
